Common name: Common Frog
Also known as: European Frog and European Common Brown Frog
Scientific name: Rana temporaria
Size: Up to 8cm
Colour: Generally brown or olive brown with a dark patch behind the eye and bands of darker colour on the back legs. Most have irregular black marks on their backs and two narrow lighter stripes running along each side of the back. You might see some that are yellow, pink or even orange as their colouring is very variable.
Description
Our most familiar amphibian. Most often seen in water, as it's skin needs to be wet/damp. They have a smooth appearance (unlike toads). However they do hop and have bulbous eyes and a wide mouth. When they swim it looks like they are doing a breaststroke with their back legs. Their back feet are webbed.
Distribution
Found throughout the UK including Corfe Mullen.
Diet
Insects, larvae, snails, slugs and worms often caught at night with their long sticky tongues. Sometimes in water, sometimes on land.
Habitat
Shallow, still, fresh water. Can be found in garden ponds or ponds and lakes in the countryside, however they do come onto dry land.

Frogs make a very loud croaking sound, especially during the mating season.
Female frogs are usually larger than males.
