Also known as: Ladybird or Seven-spotted beetle Scientific name: Coccinella septempunctata Size: 5-8mm in length Colour: Bright red with three black spots on each wing case and one black spot in the middle near the head. Black head and legs. The larvae are grey/blue and yellow striped.
Description
The most common ladybird. Much loved by gardeners as it eats aphids that attach young plants and seedlings.
Distribution
Found throughout the UK including Corfe Mullen.
Diet
Aphids (minute plant eating insects)
Habitat
They live anywhere that they can find aphids. Gardens (especially vegetable plots), fields, orchards and hedgerows.
