The Campaign To Keep Corfe Mullen Green has canvassed every household in Corfe Mullen village to assess their opinions towards recent proposals for 700 houses to be built on green belt land. Letters of objection have been received from 4500 residents, which represent the views of 55% of the village electorate. In addition, many more letters of objection have been received from outside the village, from visitors who enjoy coming to this beautiful part of Dorset. The campaign continues.
Today, in the wind and pouring rain, Barry Wilson handed over copies of these letters to Annette Brooke, MP for Mid-Dorset and North Poole.
"The message from the villagers is clear", says Barry Wilson, co-founder of The Campaign To Keep Corfe Mullen Green: "They do not want to lose their countryside to housing developments. While there is a recognised need for new housing, through the acceptable process of infilling within the village, residents strongly object to any building proposals which substantially increase the size of the village."
"In short, the majority of the villagers want to keep Corfe Mullen a village. They do not want to be part of an urban sprawl.
"Findings from a recent Corfe Mullen Parish Council questionnaire have revealed similar results, where again the Corfe Mullen residents have said a resounding "NO" with some 74% believing that Corfe Mullen's green belt should not be released for housing."
"The authorities advocating these proposals, The Regional Spatial Strategy, East Dorset County Council and the newly introduced non-elected SWRA planning authority, must pay attention and wake up to the reality of this strong protest from Corfe Mullen residents."
"On behalf of the majority of Corfe Mullen village, we ask these authorities to remove this building proposal immediately. It would be undemocratic to ignore what the majority of villagers clearly do not want.
If any Corfe Mullen resident, who has not yet written to object, and wishes to write and complain, they should contact our e-mail: or write to Campaign To Keep Corfe Mullen Green, Newtown Lane, Corfe Mullen, Wimborne BH21 3EY.
All letters of complaint will be given to Mrs Bryony Houlden, Chief Executive of the South West Regional Assembly and Councillor Mrs Queenie Comfort, Chairman of East Dorset District Council.
