Although this article is not specifically about Corfe Mullen, it does show the problem that is being faced by this area as a whole.
A DORSET MP is to speak out at a regional meeting against plans to build 44,600 new homes in the south-east of the county.
Tobias Ellwood, who represents Bournemouth West, is to address the South West Regional Assembly in Devon on Friday.
Top of the agenda is the "spatial strategy" for the region, under which around 20,000 new homes could be built in Bournemouth alone.
Mr Ellwood claims that such dense urban development could destabilise the economy and infrastructure of local communities. He also says it would wreck the green belt, arguing that the town's appeal relies on the attractive countryside and coastline around it.
"While there is a need to provide more affordable housing, concreting over the last remnants of our green belt is not the answer," he said.
"If these plans are approved, we would see new housing sprawling either side of the Wessex Way and working its way up to the airport.
"Development on this scale will seriously aggravate the traffic problems we already have."
Mr Ellwood also expressed disquiet over the loss of local democracy.
"I want to ensure that decisions about Bournemouth's future are made by people here," he said.
"Regional assemblies across the country are accumulating power from local councils. The SWRA does not primarily represent Bournemouth's interests. It should not be the responsibility of this bureaucratic and undemocratic body to make these decisions on Bournemouth's behalf." |
